Foligno Hired By Wolves As Assistant Coach

The Chicago Wolves, the AHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks, have named MIKE FOLIGNO as assistant coach.

FOLIGNO, who served most recently as an assistant coach with the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks, has played and coached at every level of hockey during his lengthy career. That includes five seasons as head coach for the Hershey Bears, where he compiled a 186-154-44-16 record and led the Bears to the AHL playoffs every year from 1999-2003.

“Mike is a guy I was surprised to find available,” said Wolves general manager WENDELL YOUNG. “He has a vast amount of experience and he’s a very enthusiastic, upbeat guy. He fits well with what we’re trying to accomplish here. For someone of his caliber to join our staff, it’s tough to argue there’s a better coaching staff at any level.”

The 53-year-old FOLIGNO joins veteran head coach SCOTT ARNIEL, who was hired on June 26, and first-year assistant NOLAN BAUMGARTNER, who was hired on July 6.

FOLIGNO was chosen by the Detroit Red Wings with the No. 3 overall pick in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft and proceeded to spend 15 seasons in the league. He produced 355 goals, 372 assists, 727 points, and 2,049 penalty minutes during 1,018 regular-season games. He added 15 goals, 17 assists, and 185 penalty minutes in 57 Stanley Cup playoff appearances.

After concluding his playing career following the 1993-94 season, the Sudbury, Ontario, native spent two seasons with the St. John’s Maple Leafs (AHL) before serving one-year terms as an assistant with the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs and Colorado Avalanche.

Following his five-year run with Hershey, FOLIGNO held the general manager and head-coaching jobs for the Ontario Hockey League’s Sudbury Wolves from 2004-10. During his seven years at the helm, Sudbury notched a 189-229-12-46 record and qualified for the playoffs six times.

In accordance with team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
